Discord IDs

So, you have an ID. Or maybe you don't. If you're trying to get an ID, use Discord's guide here.

Either way, you may be asking yourself questions such as:

What are they? What do they represent? Can I eat them?

How do I find out what they are?

If you're wondering the answer to any of these, you're in luck!

The Basics

Let's start off with the simple things. What are IDs, and what do they reprisent?

An ID, put simply, is a very large number which allows a computer to easily select the correct item from a collection.

They can represent any number of things. For example, on Discord, they reprisent Servers, Users, Messages, Channels and Roles. On our Discord bot, all pets, warnings and roulette games have their own ID.

Now, how do you work out what they are?

Unfortunately, I don't believe it's possible for message IDs.
For servers and users, it's easiest to use a service such as Discord Lookup.

However, you can also find out by typing a string of characters into a Discord channel.

For users, you can type <@(user ID)> and

it will turn the ID into a ping for that user.

For channels, you can type <#(channel ID)>

and it will turn into a ping for the channel.

Please note, if making a ping for a user comes back as "Unknown", use Discord Lookup instead.

And finally, no. You cannot eat them.
